Food choices may influence occasional puffiness after a salty meal, alcohol, hot weather or hormonal changes. That limited possibility is different from saying smoothies treat chronic fluid retention. General meal suggestions do not diagnose a disorder, establish the cause of swelling or provide an individualized potassium target.
The distinction matters because swelling is a symptom, not one condition. Mild, short-lived puffiness can reflect temporary changes in fluid balance. Edema that persists, appears suddenly or affects one part of the body can have other causes, including medicines and problems involving the veins, heart, kidneys, liver or lymphatic system.
A smoothie can contain potassium-rich foods, protein and fluid, but blending does not give those ingredients a special therapeutic effect. Any discussion of diet and swelling must separate ordinary food choices for otherwise healthy people from medical guidance for someone whose potassium handling or fluid balance may already be impaired.
What Occasional Water Retention Means

The examples included eating more salt than usual, hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, warm temperatures and alcohol. Potassium-rich foods, hydrating produce, adequate fluid intake and protein were presented as general dietary options.
Those suggestions were not the results of a clinical trial. No group of patients received a dietary intervention, and no changes in swelling, kidney function or other clinical outcomes were measured. The evidence therefore supports a modest discussion of meal choices for occasional symptoms, not a recommendation from doctors for chronic puffiness.
Frozen smoothie portions can make breakfast more convenient, but convenience is not evidence of a treatment effect. A recipe does not show that its ingredients correct edema, enter the bloodstream at a medically important time, reset digestive rhythms or prevent fluid from moving through blood-vessel walls. None of those mechanisms was tested.
Potassium Guidance Is Not One Number for Everyone
Potassium helps maintain fluid inside cells and supports normal nerve, muscle, heart and kidney function. The kidneys regulate how much potassium leaves the body. For healthy people with normal kidney function, food sources include potatoes, legumes, fruit, vegetables, dairy products, fish, meat and nuts.
The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements lists an adequate intake of 3,400 mg a day for adult men and 2,600 mg for adult women. Pregnancy and breastfeeding have separate values. These figures are reference levels for healthy people, not prescriptions for treating puffiness.
A frequently repeated figure of 4,700 mg is not the current US adequate intake for every adult. It also blurs the difference between an intake reference, the Daily Value used on food labels and a medical plan tailored to an individual.
Potassium should not be framed as an automatic countermeasure that forces the kidneys to release water. Fluid balance involves sodium, potassium, hormones, blood vessels and kidney function, among other factors. A varied diet can contribute to nutrient adequacy, but it cannot establish why someone is swollen or whether increasing one mineral is appropriate.
Kidney Function and Medicines Change the Risk
Healthy-population reference values do not apply in the same way to people with impaired potassium excretion. Chronic kidney disease can reduce the body's ability to remove potassium. High blood potassium, or hyperkalemia, can also occur with heart failure, type 1 diabetes, adrenal insufficiency or liver disease.
Several medicines affect potassium. ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers can reduce urinary potassium excretion, as can potassium-sparing diuretics. NIH guidance says people using medicines that affect potassium should discuss their intake and potassium status with a healthcare provider. Salt substitutes may also contain substantial potassium.
This context is why a fixed high-potassium target is unsafe as general swelling advice. Even ordinary dietary amounts can contribute to hyperkalemia in some people with impaired excretion. Persistent Swelling Needs a Cause, Not a Wellness Label

Treatment depends on the cause. That range cannot be compressed into an electrolyte imbalance that a breakfast drink will correct.
Clinical urgency also varies. NHS guidance advises urgent assessment when swelling is severe, painful or sudden, when the area is red or hot, or when swelling affects other areas such as the face or abdomen. Breathing difficulty, chest tightness or pain, coughing blood, faintness or confusion can signal an emergency.
The useful part of the dietary advice is modest. People who are otherwise well can include lower-sodium meals, potassium-containing foods, adequate protein and fluid within an ordinary balanced diet. Those choices are not a diagnostic test, and a short-lived change after a meal would not prove a specific mechanism.
The firm conclusion is that a smoothie should not be made to sound more powerful, or persistent swelling less consequential, than the evidence permits.
