The Strait of Hormuz crisis turned jet fuel into one of aviation's fastest-rising risks in 2026. Airlines can trim schedules, change fares, hedge part of their exposure and reroute aircraft. They cannot quickly replace refined fuel when a Gulf war squeezes crude flows, refinery output and shipping confidence at the same time.

The fuel shock therefore moved quickly from energy desks into airline planning rooms. Oil prices rose as the conflict around Hormuz disrupted a chokepoint tied to a large share of global crude movement. Jet fuel then carried its own premium because aviation depends on refined product, not just crude in the ground. When refiners, cargo owners and underwriters all reprice risk, airlines inherit the bill.

The pressure was visible in the numbers. IATA's June 2026 outlook assumed jet fuel at about $152 a barrel for the year, almost 70% higher than in 2025, with crack spreads far above normal levels. U.S. carriers' May fuel spending topped $6.6 billion, up sharply from a year earlier, mainly because prices rose rather than because airlines burned much more fuel.

Fuel Hits Airlines Before Travelers Notice

Fuel is one of an airline's largest expenses, and it reaches the income statement faster than passengers often realize. A carrier can absorb a short spike with hedging, cash reserves or slow fare changes. It cannot absorb months of elevated fuel without changing fares, capacity, fees, route choices or all four.

The first impact is usually internal: revised fuel assumptions, tougher route-profit tests, more scrutiny of marginal flights and fewer cheap seats. Passengers may not see the change immediately because tickets are sold in advance and airline pricing systems move in layers. By the time a traveler notices higher fares, the carrier may already have spent weeks protecting margin.

Long Routes Carry The Heaviest Exposure

Long-haul flying is the clearest pressure point. A wide-body aircraft burns large volumes of fuel, and there are fewer easy substitutes when airspace or refueling options become politically risky. If a route has to bend around closed or dangerous airspace, the aircraft burns more fuel, crews may hit duty limits and connections become more difficult to protect.

The costs then reinforce one another. Higher fuel raises costs. Rerouting burns more fuel. Longer block times reduce aircraft productivity. A schedule designed for one fuel price can become uneconomic under another. Cargo operators face the same problem, often with thinner buffers because freight contracts and spot demand can shift quickly.

Shipping Insurance Feeds The Same Chain

Aviation's fuel problem is tied to maritime insurance. Tankers and product cargoes moving near Hormuz face war-risk premiums when insurers believe the route has become more dangerous. Those premiums do not stay on a shipping invoice. They move into crude prices, refinery economics, freight costs and the price of jet fuel delivered to airports.

Markets also react to uncertainty before they react to closure. A strait does not have to be fully shut for costs to rise. If crews hesitate, ships change routes, insurers lift premiums, governments debate escorts or traders fear the next missile strike, supply becomes more expensive. Airlines pay for that uncertainty even though they do not control it.

Hedging Helps, But It Cannot Create Fuel

Fuel hedging can soften part of the shock, but it is not a cure. Some carriers hedge aggressively, some less so, and hedge books vary by region and accounting treatment. Even a well-hedged airline still needs physical supply at airports and still has to plan for future prices once existing protection rolls off.

The gap between crude and jet fuel is central here. If refiners are constrained or export flows are disrupted, jet fuel can stay expensive even when crude prices ease. Passengers can therefore still face high fares after headlines say oil has cooled. The airline's actual cost may be tied to fuel bought earlier, refinery margins and the local airport supply chain.

The Bill Moves From War To Fares

Aviation sits at the end of an energy-security chain it cannot command. Airlines do not decide whether Iran threatens Hormuz, whether the U.S. strikes coastal sites, whether tankers sail or whether underwriters reprice war risk. They receive the cost signal after those decisions have already been made.

Passengers then receive part of that signal through higher fares, fewer promotional seats, fuel surcharges, route cuts or weaker reliability. The Hormuz crisis shows why energy security is not an abstract oil-market phrase for aviation. It is the difference between a profitable summer and a schedule built around damage control.
